Gap Analysis:
A dynamic approach to evolving cybersecurity challenges
About gap analysis
When we undertake to perform gap analysis for an organization, we make sure to present a clear picture of two points and the gap between them in a defined area:
- Starting point: The current environment in the organization
- End point: The required, or desired, state that one strives to reach
The gap is the difference between current and desired states – the path the organization must take to get from its current state to the optimal state.
Why Website Portfolios and Surveys No Longer Cut It
Today’s dynamic digital world is changing at a dizzying pace, making traditional methods less relevant. In the past, we could record information in a website portfolio, but today systems change so rapidly that any static documentation is outdated before it’s even completed.
As for surveys – The Academy of the Hebrew Language defines the Hebrew word סקר as “an examination by collecting details to reach a conclusion about the situation in a particular area.” That is, a survey, by its very nature, presents only a single snapshot at a specific point in time – the starting point – without any reference to the path that needs to be taken to reach the destination.
The Complexity of Gap Analysis
If you think about the distance between two cities on a map, you have several ways to get there: some faster, some with more beautiful scenery, but ultimately they all lead from point A to point B.
The gap analysis we perform is significantly more complex. It involves a vast array of variables that demand high-level technical expertise, the ability to distinguish between critical and secondary tasks, and comprehensive risk mapping. It also requires the strategic insight to mitigate risks using an organization’s existing resources.
Success in this field relies on extensive, hands-on experience—not only in the specific domain under analysis but also in the peripheral areas essential to a holistic solution.
Sinopia’s Approach
At Sinopia, we understand that an organization’s primary goal is to close the gap between where they are at present and its vision for the future, more importantly – to correctly analyze the gaps, so that the organization’s management can take calculated risks and not face unexpected pitfalls. Just as important, organizations must monitor the changes and new gaps that frequently emerge over time and on an ongoing basis. The gap analysis we perform includes several key steps:
- Creating a picture of the current environment in the organization
- Building a model for the desired end state in accordance with the organization’s standards and needs
- Detailed process planning, in collaboration with the organization, of course
Working hand-in-hand with an organization, we set priorities and plan everything that needs to be done to minimize the gaps. An essential part of our work is the ongoing monitoring of new gaps, which emerge naturally as a result of the dynamism of the worlds of computing, support, and security.
In a world where change is the only constant – Sinopia provides a dynamic gap analysis, which keeps pace with the challenges you face.
